Summary:This paper describes the purification and characterization of the beta -lactamase of a strain of Proteus vulgaris 1427. The physical, chemical and immunological properties of the purified beta -lactamase were compared with those of beta -lactamases produced by other Gram-negative bacteria including those of other Proteus species. P. vulgaris 1427 was isolated from the sputum of a hospitalized patient with a respiratory tract infection.
