Summary: | The role of the nuclear family in providing support & assistance to young mothers & their offspring is examined. Data were obtained on offspring & their families regarding SES & household structures. Interviews (N = 404 pregnant adolescents) were conducted under the auspices of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Md, 3 & 5 years after delivery services were provided. Those teenage parents who continue to live with their parents & benefit from parental assistance -- financial, psychological, & child care -- do better than those who depend on their own resources. Their chances of completing their educations, getting decent jobs, & avoiding welfare are considerably greater with parental support. 5 Tables. Modified HA. |
