Summary: | Villiers Road Studios are a row of three single-occupancy units behind a homeless people's hostel (St Mungo's) in London; the units are intended to house people in preparation for more independence, and each has a courtyard plus combined living, dining and kitchen area, with a bedroom at the top. They bear the visual trademarks of their architects, Peter Barber Architects, in their white-rendered external finishes and their geometry; this white render is complemented by cedar cladding. The architects have successfully applied a notched terraced housing typology to this difficult site, using stepped sections with radiused profiles. Phil Hamilton of Barber describes a working detail of a wall section. |
