Summary:Just as it is difficult to use quantitative criteria (economic or otherwise) solely to determine whether batch or continuous distillation is preferable for a specific separation, similarly, it is hard to compare quantitatively semicontinuous with continuous and batch operations. To aid in this comparison, it is helpful to consider three criteria: capital investment, operating cost and plant flexibility.
