Milwaukee's goals were clear: to protect public health, to kill Cryptosporidium in raw water entering the treatment plant and reduce the possibility of future contamination, to control a wide range of taste and odor compounds, to minimize levels of disinfection byproducts and to meet future state and federal regulations. Included in their plans were upgrades to its 2 major drinking-water facilities, the Howard Avenue purification plant and the 275 mgd Linnwood plant, which together serve approximately 800,000 people. Efforts to address these goals are discussed in detail.
