Summary: | There is a concern in the US that many of the new construction technologies for creating underground facilities are being developed in Europe and Japan. The US has achieved excellence in areas of underground construction such as basic research, computer simulation software, and project mangagement. The US has been a leader in equipment and research. While the US, Japan, and Europe have similar themes for developing their excavation technologies, there are differences in their ways of conducting business. The Japanese ability to develop an array of underground technology includes importing innovation and improving on it. With its strong technology base, Europe has been responsible for many innovations adopted worldwide over the past few decades. The US underground construction industry is heavily owned by foreign concerns and hampered in attempts to innovate and remain competitive. The future of the US as a technological leader in underground construction looks increasingly bleak unless steps are taken to reverse the decline. |
