Summary: | Both the desire to increase productivity and advances in technology have stimulated progress in office automation. An experimental system named OPAS is being constructed at the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, to support procedure automation in an office environment. The emphasis is on a technology that permits people to automate their office and business activities. Through the use of forms as the interface, a powerful data manipulation and restructuring facility is proposed that not only permits users to extract and manipulate data in the forms, but can also be used to interface between new and existing applications. Since business and office procedures are not discrete activities but a structured sequence of activities, a way of defining and executing procedures is necessary. A way is described along with its model and an example of its applications. |
