Description
Summary:Safety was the opening theme at the International Society for Automation & Robotics in Construction's (ISARC) 11th annual conference, held in Brighton, UK, this year. Health and Safety issues preoccupy the UK construction industry at present, with the forthcoming CONDAM regulations currently going through parliamentary procedures, and the EC machinery directive requiring full compliance from January 1995. Issues were raised at the conference regarding a balanced government funding program, as well as showing that fragmentation of the construction industry is proving a barrier to the progress of automation. Developments in robotics for the construction industry have clearly slowed down. The world recession in building must account for much of this, but the lack of long- and short-term funding coupled with the technical problems associated with 3-D positioning is likely to worsen this situation in the future. Maybe it will be safety issues that provide the necessary incentive to attract serious funding.
