Summary: | Many signalized intersections that suffer from peak-period congestion could be operated at greater capacity if some low-cost tricks of the trade were applied. The strategies for low-cost improvements are not new. They sometimes are mentioned in the literature or other resources, but such references often are not detailed sufficiently and traffic engineers may not be aware of them. This article details several tricks of the trade. It explains what conditions should be present for each to be considered; details how each can be implemented safely and in conformance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and other standards and guidelines; and provides results from actual installations. |
