Description
Summary:This paper presents a numerical simulation of elastic-plastic contact behavior during unloading of a stressed sphere against a rigid flat through the finite element method. Material dependency nature of elastic-plastic contact phenomena is illustrated and compared with previous results. Simulation covers a wide range of material properties and dimensions. Analysis is extended up to 200 times that of critical interference. Characteristics are explained in the non-dimensional form. It is observed that contact behaviors of materials with low E/Y (Young's modulus/Yield strength) values cannot be brought under a unified solution.
