On the closure problem in the reduction of complex atmospheric models by PIPs and EOFs : A comparison for the case of a two-layer model with zonally symmetric forcing
Achatz and Schmitz examine several methods to obtain the best closed reduced model for their full system and compare the potential of empirical orthogonal functions and principal interaction patterns as basic patterns for low-order models with energy-conserving closure.
