Summary: | Research in the field of environmental acidification has shifted its focus from specific incidents and the biological, geographical, and chemical mechanisms of acidification, to the programs and policies addressing acidification and the definition of critical loads for both soils and waters. This trend is evident in recent publications and in documents from 1990s acid rain conferences. The critical load concept has been adopted by the UK to identify at-risk natural resources such as soils, waters, and living organisms. Although chemical criteria are currently used, critical load can be evaluated using biological criteria. |
