Summary: | The Nagoorin oil shale deposit comprises several units with a wide range of organic compositions that, on pyrolysis, yield spent shales with organic carbon concentrations of up to 50 wt %. The combustion kinetics of five units of the deposit were examined at temperatures up to 900 °C using a fluidized bed batch technique and continuous analysis of the flue gases to determine the progress of the reaction. The five units show a range of shrinking-core reaction mechanisms — from ash diffusion control for the spent shales with the lowest carbon concentrations, to reaction control for the highest carbon concentration. |
