Summary: | During the past few years significant attention has been given to something often referred to as smart growth, but also as livable communities, sustainable communities, and responsible growth. An initial definition for smart, sensible, responsible, livable, or sustainable growth is presented. Characteristics of the transportation systems that support this growth are suggested, and several issues are raised that are intended to stimulate discussion in this area. Responsible growth is the suggested term for the type of growth that communities as a whole wish to pursue to meet a full range of economic and lifestyle objectives. Some characteristics of a relevant transportation system include: 1. a networked and integrated multimodal surface transportation system, 2. street system hierarchy with sufficient but not necessarily excess capacity, and 3. livable neighborhood streets. |
