Polishing wear by soot

Surfaces of wear scars produced on type 1000 carbon steel balls rubbed against 52100 steel in the presence of mixtures of oil and fine particles have been compared. The solids were Cab-O-Sil (a silica), Alon C (an alumina) and Raven 1040 (a carbon black). The particle sizes were in the range 10–40 n...

Description
Summary:Surfaces of wear scars produced on type 1000 carbon steel balls rubbed against 52100 steel in the presence of mixtures of oil and fine particles have been compared. The solids were Cab-O-Sil (a silica), Alon C (an alumina) and Raven 1040 (a carbon black). The particle sizes were in the range 10–40 nm. Similar wear characteristics were noted for all three solids. The silica and the alumina act as abrasives, and it is inferred that carbon black also acts as an abrasive under the conditions employed in this work.
