Summary: | A call is made to high school, college, & professional athletic teams to discontinue use of racially offensive symbols & mascots. A brief history is presented of the debate at Stanford U (Calif) that resulted in the school's 1972 decision to drop its use of the racially offensive "Stanford Indians" in favor of the "Stanford Cardinals." Also discussed are past efforts by the American Indian movement to persuade such professional sports franchises as the Washington Redskins & Atlanta Braves to drop their racially demeaning symbols & mascots.
