Summary: | Theoretical calculations of the kinetics of mercury uptake and release have been compared with experimental work on the marine fish Serranus cabrilla caught off the coast of Corsica. Analysis of fish exposed to mercury under controlled conditions showed high mercury levels before intoxication, healthy fish for the first ten days of intoxication and an accelerated rate of accumulation after 11 days. The calculated elimination half-time was 1.36 days compared with an experimental result of about 100 days. Accumulation curves for individual organs are similar to those for the whole body . The discrepancy between calculated and experimental elimination half-times is discussed in relation to an observed increase of mucus production on the gills. |
