Summary:Investigated the prediction that the accuracy of evaluating videotape replay of one's own behavior is related to the defense mechanism clusters of the evaluator. 50 undergraduates were assigned to 5 groups of 10 Ss each according to their defensive tendencies (Defense Mechanisms Inventory). Each S role played 2 situations. Later, each S evaluated a videotape replay of his/her own performance and that of another person on a specially designed behavior-evaluation form. These were compared with similar evaluations obtained from independent judges. The results confirmed the prediction. Furthermore, Ss characterized by projection clusters tended to produce the greatest distortions, and those characterized by turning-against-self clusters evaluated themselves negatively. No sex differences were found. (18 ref)
