Summary: | Radioactively labeled cellulose has been used successfully as a physiological marker for gastric emptying and intestinal transit in dogs. The fiber, which is radiolabeled with an iodine isotope, is biologically stable and easily traced; no iodine was absorbed during passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Gastric emptying of the marker was very slow, unlike water-soluble tracers, as the marker is an undigestible solid. The tracer was monitored externally by gamma camera scanning. Radiolabeling did not change the texture or appearance of the fiber. Balance studies demonstrated over 90% fecal recovery of ingested labeled fiber. Body scintillation counting also confirmed that all radioactivity was localized in the abdomen; thyroid uptake of the isotope was negligible. Fiber is resistant to mechanical action by the stomach and was emptied unchanged. Human stool studies also suggested that the labeled fiber was relatively undegraded even after contact with stool flora. The marker should be useful in investigations of the effects of dietary fiber in humans |
