Summary: | Recent advances in medical diagnosis and therapy of certain childhood diseases have changed their patterns from acute short-term illnesses to chronic terminal. Psychosocial management of these patients, their families, and even the health-care professionals has not kept pace with its medical counterpart. The subject of terminal illness and death continues to receive only scant attention in medical education. This paper examines the impact of chronic hospitalization on the child, family and hospital staff, and offers some suggestions for improvement of the psychosocial management. |
