Summary: | Abstract
The design of a smart rotating machine involves the integration of controllable bearings, actuators, and sensors to measure a defined set of physical variables, an on-line adaptive controller, a control algorithm to achieve the desired performance, and an algorithm to re-configure the system in the event of faults. This review discusses each of these issues, and highlights the progress that has been made. The key role played by active magnetic bearings in the evolution of smart or self-adaptive machine design is described. |
