Summary: | Abstract
The position and shape of the parting line in forging dies have important effects on parameters such as forging force and energy, material flow, and amount of required material. An investigation was made of the effects of parting-line position on eight types of forged part classified into three main part shapes: axisymmetric parts with an element on one side, axisymmetric parts with elements on both sides, and long parts. For each part, maximum force and energy, material flow, and required material were calculated in different parting-line positions using the finite element method and analytical relationships, and results were compared. For long parts, in addition to different positions, different shapes of the parting line were also considered. In order to evaluate finite element and analytical results, experimental tests were performed on an axisymmetric part in three different parting-line positions. Good agreement among the three types of investigation was obtained. |
