Summary: | The primary impetus for this study was the observation of transmission ratio distortion for the Mhc-Eqca genes in an extended horse family and the possibility that this was mediated by t-complex-like genes. The t-complex of the mouse is a group of haplotypes derived from four ancestral inversions in the region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and from the evolution of genes which maintain the haplotypes in the population by using several mechanisms. Depending on the precise genotype, these haplotypes can cause embryonic lethality, transmission ratio distortion, and male infertility. We are particularly interested in the hypothesis that homozygosity for genes responsible for transmission ratio distortion will produce male infertility. If t-complex genes are responsible for the transmission ratio distortion in horses, then markers for these genes could be useful tools to investigate fertility problems. |
