Summary: | Researchers have disagreed about whether clients solicited for treatment in therapy outcome studies are comparable to clients who became involved in treatment through more traditional channels. This study evaluates differences between elderly subjects solicited by traditional, semitraditional, and nontraditional methods for a clinical trial of psychotherapy for unipolar depression. Demographics, treatment history, pretreatment status, treatment completion, and outcome were examined across referral source categories. No significant differences were observed. The use of the media for subject recruitment may be especially beneficial in providing educational information to an elderly population that has been said to be reluctant to seek psychological services. |
