Description
Summary:There is poor correlation between the elevated plasma catecholamines and hemodynamic variables during cardiopulmonary bypass. One of the possible mechanisms of the apparent reduced responsiveness to alpha -adrenergic stimulation by elevated catecholamine concentrations might be down-regulation of alpha -adrenergic receptors, i.e., a decrease in the number of receptors. Since regulation of platelet alpha -adrenergic receptors may be common to all alpha -adrenergic receptors, the authors measured platelet alpha -adrenergic receptors before and after cardiopulmonary bypass in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery.
