Summary: | Estimates suggest that by the year 2000, 13% of the population of the US will be age 65+. This could result in a 40% increase in MD visits & a 50% increase in short-term hospitalizations over current figures. According to these estimates, 8,000+ trained geriatricians would be needed to provide minimal care to the elderly population. Both theoretical & pragmatic research is needed before the US can adequately plan for the care of its elderly by the year 2000. 27 References. R. McCarthy |
