Description
Summary:First described by Reaven (1988) as Syndrome X, this syndrome now is defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) as the presence of three or more of the following risk factors: abdominal obesity, high triglyceride levels, low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, high blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose (Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults, 2001). DIAGNOSIS Patients of all ages must be screened for metabolic syndrome on a regular basis, because non-obese individuals are also at risk for metabolic syndrome. Because waist circumference most accurately predicts the absolute amount of visceral adipose tissue (Fowler et al., 2005), it should be measured at primary care visits, regardless of the patient's body type (Appel et al., 2004).
