Summary: | It is argued that a significant number of Ru youth are denied access to needed mental health services, & that Ru youth may be at special risk of developing psychiatric disorders. Dimensions of inadequate training, research, funding, & federal policy that contribute to the overall problem are identified. National policy requires a new approach, because existing alternatives are either too costly or unlikely to address the need adequately. Essential elements considered critical to a national health policy for Ru children & youth are detailed. A feasible, cost-effective approach is suggested that involves a series of comprehensive pilot projects; however, the development of personnel trained to function as extenders of service delivery by certified child psychiatrists & psychologists is essential to the success of any such program. 75 References.
