Summary: | The authors are involved in surveillance study of hemorrhagic colitis associated with E. coli O157:H7. They processed 1,328 stool specimens using sorbitol-MacConkey (SMAC) agar as a differential primary-isolation medium. E. coli O157:H7 was isolated from 22 (19.6%) of 112 stools from 55 patients with bloody diarrhea; it was not found in any of the 1,216 stools from patients who did not have bloody diarrhea. E. coli O157:H7 is generally not associated with nonbloody diarrheal illness. The authors advise that all bloody stools be selectively cultured for this agent. There is ready presumptive recognition of E. coli O157:H7 in stool specimens cultured in SMAC medium overnight. |
