description | A tour group visiting the USSR was exposed to Giardia lamblia. On return, a questionnaire and letter was sent to each member of the group informing them of the exposure and suggesting laboratory investigation. Sera and stools, tested for anti-Giardia immunoglobulin G and for trophozoites and cysts, respectively, were requested. Fifty-three (73%) group members who submitted serum, at least two stools and a completed questionnaire were included in this study; 43 were found to have giardiasis on stool examination. Using a four-hour ELISA technique developed in this laboratory, 15 sera from these stool-positive cases were positive on serological examination. While serological methods may be a useful adjunct in clinical and epidemiological investigations of giardiasis, further developments are necessary before this type of testing will become both practical and useful. |
