Do we need more anti-hypertensive drugs: lessons from the new biology

An increasing proportion of the adult population receives antihypertensive medication, resulting in a substantial decline in strokes and perhaps myocardial infarction. Shortcomings in current treatments, the importance of heterogeneity and the promise of molecular genetics are discussed.
