Phagolysosome Formation by Polymorphonuclear Neutrophilic Leukocytes After Ingestion of Escherichia coli that Express Type 1 Pili
Escherichia coli that express type 1 pili T1P super(+) E. coli) adhere to human polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocytes (PMNLs) and are subsequently ingested and killed in the absence of serum opsonins. Such nonopsonic activation of PMNLs, if of a sufficient magnitude, might explain why these bact...

Summary: | Escherichia coli that express type 1 pili T1P super(+) E. coli) adhere to human polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocytes (PMNLs) and are subsequently ingested and killed in the absence of serum opsonins. Such nonopsonic activation of PMNLs, if of a sufficient magnitude, might explain why these bacteria have been epidemiologically linked with superficial, rather than invasive, infections of the urinary tract. The authors report the results of studies in which they compared the rate at which PMNLs ingest and kill type 1 pili-expressing and nonexpressing (T1P super(-)) phase variants of a single strain of E. coli). |
