Summary: | Epiglottitis occurs most frequently in children 2-7 yr old, but is occasionally seen in adults. The authors have treated 14 cases of acute epiglottitis in patients less than 2 yr old, the youngest being only 7 months of age. The clinical features of the disease in infants were more variable than those the older children, and the diagnosis was not immediately obvious. Supraglottitis has been used to describe the bacterial infaction involving the supraglottic structures, including the epiglottis, arytenoids, aryepiglottic folds, and uvula, and may be more appropriate. In two patients, there were radiological evidence of edema involving the larynx and trachea, as well as the supraglottic structures. three cases are reported to illustrate the atypical presentation of epiglottitis in the young infants. |
