Summary: | Fifty children (33 male and 17 female) suffering from shigellosis with mean age of 2.6, (range : 6 months — 8 years) and admitted to the Rangoon Children's Hospital during June 1985 were studied. Shigella dysenteriae type 1 was isolated from the stools of 24 among them. Haemolytic-oliguric syndrome, defined by a fall in haematocrit >10% within the first week of admission, oliguria and blood urea 9.7 mmol/l, was developed in 4 malnourished children, of whom two died. Three of them had detectable levels of endotoxin in their blood. In total, 5 deaths occurred — 2 from haemolytic-uraemic syndrome, 1 from septicaemia, 1 from peritonitis, and 1 from fulminant encephalopathy. This is the first report of HUS from Burma. |
