Chloramphenicol resistance in clinical isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 0:3 biotype 4
The authors studied the antibiotic susceptibility of 144 Y. enterocolitica serotype 0:3 biotype 4 strains isolated from diarrhoeal stools, mainly from children, by the Kirby Bauer method with an inoculum of 5 x 10 super(7)-10 super(8) cfu/ml. Resistance to chloramphenicol, with no inhibition zone ro...

Summary: | The authors studied the antibiotic susceptibility of 144 Y. enterocolitica serotype 0:3 biotype 4 strains isolated from diarrhoeal stools, mainly from children, by the Kirby Bauer method with an inoculum of 5 x 10 super(7)-10 super(8) cfu/ml. Resistance to chloramphenicol, with no inhibition zone round a 30 mu g disc, was seen in 12 isolates. Later susceptibility studies by the agar dilution method, with Isosensitest agar and an inoculum of 10 super(4) cfu showed a chloramphenicol MIC of greater than or equal to 64 mg/l for these twelve strains. The MIC for the other 132 strains was mu 8 mg/l (MIC sub(50), 4 mg/l/ MIC sub(90), 8 mg/l). All the chloramphenicol-resistant strains of Y. enterocolitica were resistant to streptomycin and sulphonamides. |
