Use of DNA Probes and HEp-2 Cell Adherence Assay to Detect Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli

Four major categories of Escherichia coli are recognized as causes of diarrheal disease, including enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). The study described here was carried out in young children with acu...

Description
Summary:Four major categories of Escherichia coli are recognized as causes of diarrheal disease, including enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). The study described here was carried out in young children with acute diarrheal disease in Santiago, Chile, to assess the practicality of the EAF probe in identifying EPEC in coprocultures and to compare it with results of the HEp-2 cell assay and with definitive O serogrouping and to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of a DNA probe to identify E. coli manifesting the true diffuse pattern of adherence in the HEp-2 assay.
