Description
Summary:Porter and colleagues reported three cases of tuberculous bronchoesophageal fistulae in HIV-infected patients [1]. We recently cared for another such patient with concomitant cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Unlike the three cases reported by Porter et al., our patient had dual infection with M. tuberculosis and CMV. Although CMV can often be isolated from immunocompromised patients in the absence of disease, our patient had histological evidence of inclusions believed to be indicative of infection. As he had an excellent response to a combination of antiviral and antituberculous chemotherapy, we can only speculate as to the importance of either CMV or M. tuberculosis in producing our patient's disease.
