Summary: | A 74-year-old woman had documented pulmonary emboli. She was started on heparin therapy, but heparin-associated thrombocytopenia developed. An inferior vena cava filter was placed, but renal function deteriorated. A renal dynamic study revealed aortic and renal perfusion; however, the inferior vena cava was not visualized. The inference was that the abdominal vena cava was totally obstructed or was filled with clots; the latter was confirmed radiographically. |
