Intraventricular injections of galanin reduces 5-HT metabolism in the ventral limbic cortex, the hippocampal formation and the fronto-parietal cortex of the male rat

To understand the role of galanin in the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neurons the authors have investigated possible galanin/5-HT interactions at the presynaptic level by analysing the effects of intraventricular injections of galanin on 5-HT levels and metabolism in various cortical regions of the ma...

Description
Summary:To understand the role of galanin in the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neurons the authors have investigated possible galanin/5-HT interactions at the presynaptic level by analysing the effects of intraventricular injections of galanin on 5-HT levels and metabolism in various cortical regions of the male rat. The present results indicate that the intraventricular injections of subnanomolar amounts of galanin in the awake unrestrained male rat reduces 5-HT metabolism, as evaluated from the ratio 5-HIAA/5-HT in the frontoparietal cortex, in the hippocampal formation and in the ventral limbic cortex.
