Summary: | This paper identifies factors associated with the decline in employment-based health insurance between 1988 and 1993. The contribution of these factors in explaining the decrease in employment-based health coverage over the period is explored using regression-based decomposition analysis. Our results indicate that decreased percentages of employers sponsoring health insurance plans, reductions in real wages, a trend toward using part-time workers, a decline in unionization, and the movement of workers across industry sectors account for 24% to 51% of the decline in employment-based health insurance coverage between 1988 and 1993. |
