description | The way in which the reform of the guilds of devotion and mutual assistance developed in Mexico City illustrates some of the approaches linked with the peak of Bourbon absolutism and reformism towards the end of the XVIII century. The rich archival documentation allows us to inquire into the role played by corporations in the strategies of the governing elites to fulfil the goals of the Crown in that period: increase the resources of their domains or improve their use without provoking disorders and social dissent, but at the same time taking advantage of the opportunity to foment the improvement of "customs" and "public benefit". The same documentation also provides data about the interactions between the authorities and the public during the reform process, data that illustrates the response and aspirations of the public as well as the limitations that the so called "absolutism" imposed upon itself. |
