Summary: | Transient neutropenia and thrombocytopenia may occur in the course of acute human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients, newborn infants, and congenitally infected infants. The authors examined the effect of HCMV on hemopoietic cell colony formation in vitro. Mononuclear cells (MNCs) isolated from normal human bone marrow (BM) or from cord blood (CB) from normal deliveries were infected with either a laboratory strain or one of several recent clinical isolates of HCMV, and the formation of granulocyte/macrophage (GM) or erythrocytic (BFU-E) colonies in semi-solid medium was measured. |
