Description
Summary:Outbreaks of Mycoplasma-associated polyarthritis among farmed crocodiles were first reported in Zimbabwe. A similar disease was later reported in the USA in alligators, in crocodiles from Israel and the Canary Islands. The Zimbabwean isolates have recently been assigned to a new species, provisionally named Mycoplasma crocodyli. Affected animals in Zimbabwe were treated with tetracycline which ameliorated the clinical signs, but relapses had commonly occurred. Therefore, it was felt that a vaccine might prove more effective in controlling the outbreaks than sustained chemotherapy. This short communication describes the results of an experimental trial with an alum-adjuvanted vaccine.
