Summary: | The Society for Adolescent Medicine (Blue Springs, MO) is committed to providing private & confidential health services for adolescents, an increasingly relevant issue. Confidentiality & related terms are defined, & ethical & philosophical reasons for confidentiality reviewed. It is noted that many adolescents would not seek care without a guarantee of confidentiality, thus precluding diagnosis & appropriate treatment. The evolution & nature of existing legal guidelines are discussed, & specific issues considered, eg, consent, payment, managed care, & written medical records. Suggstions are offered concerning issues of practical concern, such as the nature of the health provider's contract with the patient & parent. 47 References. E. Munson |
