Inactivation of amoxycillin, clavulanate and the combination by faecal preparations from volunteers

Description
Summary:Antibiotics active against Gram-positive bacteria often affect the anaerobic intestinal microflora and thus the colonization resistance. However, if such antibiotics are inactivated by enzymes in the intestine, they will not exert their negative influence on the anaerobic bacterial flora. The combination of amoxycillin and clavulanate is active against amoxycillin-sensitive bacteria as well as many amoxycillin-resistant strains. We have investigated the inactivation of amoxycillin, clavulanate and the combination by faecal enzyme preparations from healthy volunteers.
