Summary: | Scrub typhus is found throughout parts of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. The disease is clustered geographically, probably because of the suitability of local habitats for the appropriate rodent host and the disease vector, the trombiculid mite. Rickettsia tsutsugamushi is the causative agent of the disease, which is confirmed by serologic tests. Isolates of this species show a good deal of antigenic variation. To provide a relatively simple method of isolate identification and to better understand the genetic relatedness between isolates, we have studied the DNA that encodes an important antigen present during scrub typhus infections, using gene amplification techniques and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. This paper is a preliminary communication of that work; a manuscript describing these studies in more detail is in preparation. |
