Summary: | For the past 20 years the rate of infections caused by highly or moderately penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae has been increasing. There have been, however, few studies on penicillin-resistant strains in Turkey. The presence of penicillin resistance in strains of pneumococci was finally reported in 1992. After this, a few studies showed that a resistance with a MIC of > 1 mu g/ml was present in 0-20% of strains of pneumococci. For this reason, this study was carried out to determine the rate of penicillin resistance in pneumococci in the Balcali Hospital of the Cukurova University Medical Faculty, which services a wide area of the southern part of Turkey. |
