Description
Summary:The embryonic stem (ES) cell has been a remarkably successful tool for creating transgenic and knockout animals. Indeed, genetic manipulation of ES cells remains the only routine method of carrying out specific genetic targeting (homologous recombination) at precise chromosomal locations in mice. In this issue, Cibelli et al. report the first pluripotent cells isolated from a bovine species that have the potential to form chimeras. These pluripotent bovine cells not only have potential for generating organs/tissues for use in xenotransplantation, but also bring closer the intriguing possibility of human ES cell lines for use in therapeutic applications.
