Summary:The authors reviewed the records of 108 male patients (13-80 years of age) admitted to their department for treatment of Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF), a rickettsial infection that is widespread in the Mediterranean basin. The aim was to see whether the G6PD deficiency was related to more severe illness in MSF which is benign and somewhat milder than RMSF. The incidence of complications (90.90%) was significantly higher in subjects who were deficient in G6PD than in subjects with normal G6PD levels. Renal alterations, which affected 80% of those patients with complications, were the most frequent complications, followed by hepatic ones (60%), and cardiovascular and respiratory involvement (both at 50%).
