Summary: | Tc-99m labeled pentavalent DMSA has been shown to be a reliable imaging agent for the detection of both soft tissue and bony metastases in patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. In a recent series, all patients with distant metastases showed abnormal foci Tc-99m pentavalent DMSA uptake, and 95% of lesions were detected. There were no documented cases of false-positive uptake among 56 patients with histologically proven medullary carcinoma of the thyroid reported in three large studies. A patient is described with false-positive uptake of Tc-99m labeled pentavalent DMSA in a molar root fragment with a periapical granuloma. |
